Lady Wolverines Pull Away Late to Defeat Delaware Tech, 79–64

Newark, NJ - The Essex County College women's basketball team picked up a strong home victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Delaware Tech 79–64 to continue their solid play this season.

The Lady Wolverines were paced by a balanced offensive attack and control of the glass, finishing with a 52–37 rebounding advantage. Freshman guard, Gabriella Brown led all scorers with 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting, adding four rebounds and two steals. Sophomore point guard, Mia-Marie Thomas followed with 14 points, knocking down nine of her 10 free-throw attempts while contributing four rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Sophomore guard, Aniya Brown turned in an all-around performance with 15 points, eight rebounds, and a team-high five assists, while sophomore center, Kayley Lynch dominated inside with 11 rebounds to go along with nine points and a block. Freshman forward, Essence Cushionberry added nine points, six rebounds, and a steal to round out the starters.

Off the bench, sophomore guard, Katherinne Avecillas provided a strong presence on the boards with 14 rebounds, and sophomore guard, Natalie Fonseca chipped in four points and five rebounds as Essex maintained its energy throughout the game.

As a team, Essex shot 39.4 percent from the field, connected on six three-pointers, and converted 21-of-30 from the free-throw line to secure the win.

The Lady Wolverines are back in action on Tuesday, January 20th, as they host Westchester Community College at 5:00 p.m. in their second matchup of the season.
