Essex County College’s women’s basketball team showcased their dominance

Newark, NJ- Essex County College's women's basketball team showcased their dominance on December 13, 2025, defeating Raritan Valley Community College 69–53 in a game that demonstrated both their offensive firepower and suffocating defense.

Essex was patient on offense, but Raritan Valley's defense kept things close. Gabriella Brown led the way early, scoring 6 points in the quarter, while Essence Cushionberry and Aniya Brown contributed key rebounds and assists.

As the game progressed, Essex's intensity ramped up. Despite only leading by 5 at halftime (28–23), it was clear that Essex had control of the tempo. The third quarter would be the turning point. Coming out of the break with renewed energy, Essex exploded offensively, outscoring Raritan Valley 31–14 in the period. The ball movement was fluid, and the Lions found great success from beyond the arc, particularly from Mia-Marie Thomas, who hit 3-of-4 three-pointers in the third.

Brown continued to dominate, finishing the game with 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. The versatile guard was a constant threat, both scoring from the perimeter and attacking the basket. Aniya Brown also came alive in the second half, contributing 7 points and 8 rebounds, controlling the glass and helping Essex maintain a solid defensive presence.

The team's defense was a key factor in the win, forcing 13 turnovers and holding Raritan Valley to just 53 points. They were aggressive in transition, constantly pressuring the ball and getting out on fast breaks. Essex's depth also played a crucial role, with the bench contributing meaningful minutes. Kayley Lynch was especially active on the boards, pulling down 12 rebounds to lead the team, and Michelle Hernandez chipped in 3 points while adding 6 rebounds of her own.

Essex shot 39.3% from the field, including 40.9% from three-point range, and converted 85.7% of their free throws (12-of-14). The balanced scoring attack—led by Brown, Cushionberry, and Thomas—ensured they kept Raritan Valley at arm's length throughout the second half.

The next game will be played at Lackawanna College at 5pm this Tuesday.
