Newark, NJ-Essex County College got the start it wanted and the finish it needed in a 53–46 victory over Prince George's Community College on Tuesday night.
The Wolverines opened the game with a dominant 21–6 first quarter, using crisp ball movement and active defense to seize control early. Essence Cushionberry pushed the tempo and found her rhythm from long range, setting the tone for the offense.
Prince George's fought back in the middle quarters and again late, but Essex held steady. Essence Cushionberry led all scorers with 19 points, adding 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Aniya Brown chipped in 10 points and 6 rebounds, while Natalie Fonseca delivered 6 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists in a versatile performance. Off the bench, Kayley Lynch added 6 points and strong play on the boards.
Despite some missed free throws and late pressure from the Owls, the Wolverines' early surge and balanced production sealed their 3–0 start.
Essex returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 20th, at home against UCNJ.
