Essex County Outlasts Chesapeake in Overtime Thriller, 91–83

Newark, NJ | The Essex County College women's basketball team battled their way to a hard-fought 91–83 overtime victory over Chesapeake College on Saturday, improving their early-season form with a thrilling performance on their home court.

After leading by as many as 11 in the second quarter, the Wolverines had to withstand a furious second-half rally from Chesapeake, who outscored Essex 26–16 in the third quarter to tie things up. The game remained neck-and-neck through the final period, sending the contest into overtime tied at 72–72. Essex then dominated the extra session, outscoring Chesapeake 15–7 to seal the win.

Sophomore guard Gabriella Brown led the charge with a spectacular 31-point performance, shooting an efficient 13-of-15 from the field, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Brown also contributed four assists, three steals, and a block in one of her most complete games of the season.

Sophomore guard Aniya Brown came off the bench to provide a major spark, pouring in 22 points and hitting three triples, while also adding four assists and four steals. Michelle Hernandez was a dominant presence inside, collecting a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, along with a block and strong interior defense.

Kayley Lynch added 14 points and six rebounds, while Mia-Marie Thomas provided valuable minutes off the bench with 7 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds. Essex's balanced offense and relentless defensive pressure forced Chesapeake into turnovers and helped control the tempo down the stretch.

Essex shot an impressive 56.1% from the field and 60% from three-point range, showcasing efficient ball movement and composure under pressure.
