Essex Men Indoor Track Team Show Progress at METS Championship
Staten Island, NY - The Essex County College men's indoor track and field team continued its steady progression at the METS Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday, January 30, at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. Competing against a deep field of four-year programs, the Wolverines showcased growth across sprints, middle distance, and distance events, highlighted by strong performances from Iddrish Musah and Sanjay Weekes as both closed in on JUCO National qualifying standards.
In the men's 60 meters, Musah led the way by qualifying fifth overall in a loaded field of 48 runners with a time of 6.99 seconds in the preliminaries before being disqualified in the finals. Weekes followed with a solid 7.17, placing 18th, while Isaiah Biggs rounded out the group with a time of 7.44.
Musah rebounded in a big way in the 200 meters, delivering one of the Wolverines' top performances of the meet with a third-place finish out of 65 competitors, clocking 21.83. Weekes also cracked the top 10, finishing eighth in 22.40. Personal growth continued throughout the event, as Jamali Campbell posted a personal best of 24.13, while Raziel O'Mealely (23.46) and Biggs (23.61) gained valuable championship experience.
In the 400 meters, O'Mealely ran 54.57, and Campbell added another personal best with a time of 56.32. Abdul Rahaman and Oyodele Ayotunde delivered strong efforts in the 500 meters, both setting personal bests as Rahaman finished 12th in 1:07.87, and Ayatunde placed 16th with a time of 1:10.44.
Distance standout Matthew Grano anchored the Wolverines' middle- and long-distance efforts, finishing 10th in the mile with a time of 4:29.11 and following that with an 11th-place finish in the 3000 meters at 9:19.99. Alejandro Arreaga competed in both events as well, running 4:42.14 in the mile and 9:48.16 in the 3000.
Although the men's 4x400-meter relay did not start, the overall performance reflected continued development and momentum for the Wolverines as the indoor season moves forward.
With Musah and Weekes leading the charge in the sprints and multiple personal bests across the roster, Essex County College continues to trend upward as it prepares for upcoming competition.
The Wolverines are back in action on Friday, February 6, at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex for the Fast Track National Invitational.
