Harcum College Secures 1-0 Win Over Essex County in Defensive Battle
Newark, NJ | A lone goal in the 15th minute was all that separated the sides as Harcum College earned a narrow 1-0 victory over Essex County College on October 11th.
Harcum midfielder Riccardo Giovanelli provided the game-winner, scoring unassisted early in the first half. Despite being the only shot recorded in the match, Giovanelli's finish proved decisive in a contest defined by physicality and defense.
Essex County was unable to generate any shots on goal but stayed competitive through set pieces, earning six corner kicks over the two halves. Harcum did not register any corners or additional shots after the early goal.
The Essex defense, anchored by their goalkeeper with four saves, kept the game within reach, but the offense struggled to break through Harcum's back line. Harcum's keeper remained untested, as Essex failed to put a shot on target.
The match saw an uptick in physicality, with Harcum picking up four yellow cards—two in each half—issued to Gustavo Negrete Barr, Lucas De Pedro Sanch, Noah Kaiser, and Roland Kabore. Essex played hard but remained card-free, though they committed 19 fouls over the course of the match.
With the win, Harcum defends their home turf and adds another clean sheet to their record, while Essex County will look to regroup and reignite their offense heading into the next stretch of the season.
The Wolverines' next game will be played on October 16th at Union County College.
