Mercer Outlasts Essex in Overtime Thriller, 103–95

West Windsor, NJ - Essex County College came up just short in a hard-fought overtime battle Saturday afternoon, falling to Mercer County Community College, 103–95, in a game that went down to the final minutes at Mercer.

The Wolverines showed grit and resilience throughout regulation, trading runs with Mercer and forcing overtime after a tightly contested second half. However, Mercer's execution and timely scoring in the extra period proved to be the difference as Essex couldn't quite keep pace down the stretch.

Sophomore center, Rodney Willis Jr. anchored the Essex effort with a dominant performance in the paint, finishing with a game-high 26 points on an efficient 13-of-17 shooting while pulling down 11 rebounds for a double-double. Willis was a steady presence all afternoon, keeping the Wolverines within striking distance.

Freshman guard, Carl Matala provided a major spark off the bench, pouring in 23 points and knocking down four three-pointers to fuel Essex's offense. Sophomore point guard, Ethan Laquindanum also turned in a strong all-around performance, scoring 20 points to go along with four assists, four steals, and a block.

Freshman guard, Gavin Wright contributed across the stat sheet with seven rebounds and three assists, while sophomore guard, Gabriel Morales added 13 points and seven rebounds despite facing defensive pressure from Mercer throughout the game.

Essex struggled from long range, shooting just 19 percent (8-for-42) from beyond the arc, and left points on the board at the free-throw line, converting 7 of 12 attempts. Those missed opportunities loomed large in overtime as Mercer capitalized on its chances.

Despite the loss, the Wolverines showed depth, toughness, and flashes of high-level play that bode well as conference action continues.

Essex will look to bounce back quickly as they return to the court on Tuesday, February 3rd, traveling to face Middlesex College in their second Region / GSAC conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
