Essex Pulls Away in Second Half for 101–81 Win Over Raritan Valley

Newark, NJ- Essex County College turned a tight first half into a statement win on Saturday afternoon, pulling away from Raritan Valley Community College for a 101–81 victory on December 13, 2025.

The opening 20 minutes were competitive, with both teams trading baskets and pushing the pace. Raritan Valley stayed aggressive offensively and went into the locker room down just two, 47–45, after an evenly played first half that featured quick ball movement and strong interior play on both sides.

The game changed after halftime.

Essex came out with renewed energy, using depth and defensive pressure to slowly create separation. The Lions controlled the glass, forced turnovers, and began to wear down Raritan Valley with balanced scoring from both the starting lineup and the bench. A steady stream of trips to the free-throw line helped Essex build momentum, as they finished the game shooting 21-of-31 from the stripe.

Ethan Laquindanum led the way with 16 points, attacking the basket and converting 8-of-9 free throws to keep Essex in rhythm. Jason Martinez added 15 points, while Jaden Reid and Gavin Wright each chipped in 13 off the bench, providing a spark that Raritan Valley struggled to contain. Ryan English followed with 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers that helped stretch the lead midway through the second half.

Essex's depth proved to be the difference. The Lions received contributions from 11 different players and finished with 32 total rebounds, 18 assists, and 11 steals. Their defensive activity disrupted Raritan Valley's offensive flow, particularly late, as the lead grew into double digits and never looked back.

By the final buzzer, Essex had outscored Raritan Valley 54–36 in the second half, turning a close contest into a convincing 101–81 win. The performance showcased Essex County College's balance, resilience, and ability to close games—an encouraging sign as the season continues.

The next game will be played at Lackawanna College at 7pm this Tuesday.
