Essex Men Fall in Double Overtime to Division III Nationally Ranked Salem

Newark, N.J. — In one of the most thrilling contests of the season, the Essex County College men's basketball team battled Division III nationally ranked No. 2 Salem Community College to double overtime before ultimately falling 109–106 on Saturday in Newark. Despite the result, the Wolverines delivered one of their strongest performances of the year, showcasing resilience, depth, and efficient scoring against one of the top Division III programs in the country.

Essex shot an impressive 50.6% from the field and 50% from three-point range, with five players scoring in double figures.

The offensive charge was led by sophomore point guard, Ethan Laquindanum, who erupted for 30 points on 11-of-21 shooting, including five made three-pointers. He added 4 assists and 3 steals, keeping Essex within striking distance throughout regulation and both overtime periods.

Inside, sophomore forward, Emard Babacap was dominant on the glass, recording 16 points and 15 rebounds for a strong double-double, while shooting 7-for-11 from the floor. Sophomore center, Rodney Willis Jr. added 8 points and 11 rebounds, anchoring the Wolverines defensively.

Off the bench, Freshman small forward, Ryan English made a major impact with 18 points and 6 rebounds, and Freshman guard, Christian Hampton contributed 9 points and 4 rebounds in key stretches.

Sophomore guard, Jason Martinez chipped in 15 points, including two three-pointers, and sophomore guard, Jaden Reid added 5 points and 2 assists.

Despite matching Salem nearly shot for shot across both overtime periods, the Mighty Oaks ultimately pulled away late. Essex, however, impressed with its balanced attack, 48 total rebounds, and relentless energy.

The Wolverines look to get back in the win column as they face regional conference opponent County College of Morris on Tuesday, November 25th at 7:00 p.m. in Randolph.
