Essex Holds Off Delaware Tech in Gritty 87–85 Finish
Rockville, MD - Essex County College didn't just win on Saturday—they earned every bit of it. What began as a confident, fast-paced first half turned into a tense, nail-biting finale as the Wolverines escaped with an 87–85 victory over Delaware Technical Community College in the Montgomery College Tip-Off Tournament.
Essex controlled the opening half behind the relentless presence of Rodney Willis Jr., who dominated the paint with second-chance points and shot-blocking. Ethan Laquindanum kept the offense humming, scoring with efficiency and helping Essex build a 45–35 halftime lead.
But Delaware Tech came out of the locker room swinging. Essex turnovers mounted, the lead shrank possession by possession, and suddenly the game that once looked comfortable became a fight for survival.
That's when Emard Babacap gave Essex the lift it needed. His energy off the bench—14 points, 14 rebounds—helped steady the team as Delaware Tech surged. Willis Jr. continued controlling the glass, finishing with a massive 21 rebounds and 5 blocks, while Laquindanum added 18 points to keep Essex just ahead.
Despite missed free throws and late pressure, the Wolverines made enough plays in the final minute to cling to the win. When the final Delaware Tech shot bounced off the rim, Essex could finally breathe.
Essex now looks to build momentum as they return back to Mongomery College in the second MC Tip-Off game against Paul D. Camp Community College at 1:00pm.
