Essex County Dominates Ulster 110–70 First Win of the Season
Newark, NJ | The crowd at Essex County College had plenty to cheer about Tuesday night as the Wolverines stormed past Ulster County Community College in a commanding 110–70 victory. From start to finish, Essex controlled the tempo, showcasing depth, teamwork, and relentless energy on both ends of the court.
Essex wasted no time setting the tone. Sophomore guard Jaden Reid pushed the pace early, finding open teammates and attacking the rim for quick points. His leadership helped the Wolverines jump out to an early double-digit lead. Behind him, Ethan Laquindanum was a spark on both ends, tallying 13 points, seven assists, and four steals, keeping Ulster's defense guessing.
In the paint, Rodney Willis Jr. was a force of nature. The sophomore forward muscled his way to a double-double, scoring 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and grabbing 10 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass. His presence inside gave Essex second-chance opportunities all game long.
While the starters built the lead, the bench made sure it never slipped away. Ryan English came in firing, knocking down four three-pointers and finishing with a team-high 19 points on an impressive 6-for-9 from the field. Blake Flores-Duncan and Gavin Wright brought energy off the bench, combining for 17 points and converting key free throws to keep the pressure on Ulster.
Essex's shooting was sharp all night — 51.3% from the field, 37% from three, and a stellar 81.5% from the free-throw line. The team's unselfishness stood out, with 22 assists on 39 made baskets, while their defensive hustle led to 11 steals and numerous fast-break opportunities.
Carl Matala added 11 points and three rebounds, connecting on three shots from beyond the arc, while Christian Hampton, Wesley Lafleur, and Aleem Hall each chipped in valuable minutes and scoring contributions.
By halftime, the Wolverines had built a comfortable lead, and they never looked back. Essex's mix of veteran poise and youthful energy overwhelmed Ulster, who struggled to find an answer for the Wolverines' offensive balance and defensive intensity.
When the final buzzer sounded, Essex stood tall with 110 points on the board — a complete team effort that displayed the depth and chemistry of this year's squad.
Next game will be played against Delaware Technical Community College at the Montgomery College Tip-off tournament on November 15th at 3:00pm.
